Skopje is a different city to what it once was. In 1963 it was hit by a devastating earthquake, bringing its examples of historic architecture to rubble. It was rebuilt not in its original form, but with slabs of concrete using the then-communist fashion. The Macedonian government is now undertaking a project to rebuild the old iconic buildings that once stood in Skopje such as the national theatre, and making some new additions.
